BRISBANE PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

PHOTOGRAPHING HERMIONE…

A few weeks ago during a visit to Brisbane I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Hermione. I had photographed her parents joining ceremony in Brisbane12 years earlier and it remains one of my favourite weddings that I have photographed. Their 2 yr old boy, Bede was very ill at the time with 2 types of pneumonia . His doctors let him attend the ceremony as he was best man but he had to wear a paper mask, which he proceeded to eat and it had entirely disappeared by the end of ceremony.

The family moved from steamy Brisbane to southern Tasmania and lived at Holly Tree farm in a rambling old farm house. Hermione was born and raised in the 'wilds' (as she calls it) of Tasmania. She arrived 3 days early in August 2009, in a winter gale.

A mysterious baby, Hermione had a serious disposition and very large grey/green enigmatic eyes that turned to hazel as she turned into a child. Strangers often approached her mother on the street to comment on her eyes and ask to hold her.

When Hermione was almost one, on the night of a blood moon in the depths of winter, the old farm house burnt down as the family slept - it was a near miss and was the beginning of a very difficult time for her parents and brother, as their home and most of their possessions were lost, not to mention their cat. However, from this point Hermione blossomed and was the source of great joy and hope through what was a very difficult time.

Hermione embodies a fairy-like persona - probably due to a childhood roaming the glades and forests and streams of her homes in southern Tasmania. She literally dances, cartwheels and twirls through life. She has a complex personality - a sharp wit, loves a party but at the same time can be deeply caring and takes seriously issues to do with climate change and injustice- she flips from the sanguine to the phlegmatic.  She is somewhat of a pied-piper - especially with small children.

I loved photographing Hermione and capturing the essence of her personality. I feel such joy at having the opportunity to revisit this lovely family and to be able to give them a beautiful keepsake of their daughter’s younger years.

My fine art portraiture is suitable for children of any age and the results are beautiful and timeless.
